Malayan English Academy Phonics classes are suitable for children ages 3-12 years old. In this course, students will learn how to pronounce English words systematically and correctly.
It will be a great foundation for them before learning more complex English vocabularies and pronunciations later in life.
With our Phonics class, your child will be able to:
  • Learn English pronunciation and dictation step-by-step
  • Recognise correct English sounds
  • Discover connections between English pronunciation and the alphabet
  • Learn English phonetics in a fun way through songs and games
There are 5 Phonics levels, from Stepper, Walkers, Jumpers, to Runners and Soarers.
The first level of Phonics will get your child familiar with the English alphabet. Level 1 Phonics is a helpful course for a child’s oratory development. It can provide the correct foundation towards speaking English correctly and clearly.

In Phonics Level 1, Steppers will learn to:
  • Familiarise with all the letters in the English alphabet
  • Recognise the sound the letters make
  • Listen and repeat singular letters pronunciation
  • Match basic vocabulary to the correct picture

Examples of Level 1 Phonics lesson:
  • F is for Fish
  • E is for Elephant
  • D is for Dog
After learning the basic steps of the correct English pronunciation, Level 2 Phonics will further teach your child to pronounce two-letter combinations that are common in the English language. This is where they will learn how to pronounce two letters that are joined together.

In Phonics Level 2, Walkers will learn to:
  • Pronounce two-letter combination such as ‘ap’, ‘ad’, ‘at’ and many more
  • Listen and repeat letter combinations correctly
  • Match new vocabulary to the correct picture

Examples of Level 2 Phonics lesson:
  • ‘Ad’ in Dad
  • ‘At’ in Bat
  • ‘Ag’ in Rag
Phonics Level 3 is where your child will learn three-letter combination and pronounce tricky vowel combinations. Jumpers will get to know how to correctly pronounce more vocabulary and recognise two identical words that sound similar.

In Phonics Level 3, Jumpers will learn to:
  • Pronounce three-letter combination such as ‘ive’, ‘ine’, ‘ime’ and many more
  • Listen and repeat vocabulary correctly
  • Pronounce words with tricky vowels correctly

Examples of Level 3 Phonics lesson:
  • ‘Ive’ in Five and Dive
  • ‘Ine’ in Line, Pine and Nine
  • ‘A_e’ in Lake and Gate
Phonics Level 4 students are now ready to tackle tricky letter combinations. Whether it’s a two or three-letter combination, Runners will be taught to pronounce them well. They will also be introduced to words that start with a double consonant.

In Phonics Level 4, Runners will learn to:
  • Pronounce words that start with a double consonant such as ‘pr’, ‘br’ and many more
  • Listen and repeat new vocabulary correctly
  • Recognise new English words and match with the pictures

Examples of Level 4 Phonics lesson:
  • ‘Fr’ in Frog and Friday
  • ‘Dr’ in Drum and Dress
  • ‘Cl’ in Clock and Club
The final Phonics level ensures that your child is taught all of the foundations in English phonetics. Soarers will be introduced to double vowels that are common in English. They will also get to know how to correctly pronounce and recognise identical words that may sound similar, but are different in meaning.

In Phonics Level 5, Soarers will learn to:
  • Pronounce double vowels such as ‘ou’, ‘oo’, ‘ai’ and many more
  • Listen and repeat words correctly
  • Match new vocabulary to the correct picture

Examples of Level 5 Phonics lesson:
  • ‘Ou’ in Mouse
  • ‘Ow’ in Cow
  • ‘Oi’ in Coin
  • ‘Oy’ in Toy
